“Summer Wrestling Makes Winters Champions” is a motto that both returning captains, sophomore, Andrew Maraini and Junior, Vinnie D’Ortone take to heart. This past weekend Andrew wrestled in the Sophomore Nationals held at Virginia Beach, Virginia. This was Andrew’s first trip to what is considered the toughest tournament in the nation as it attracts only the best wrestlers from each state. Despite his best efforts Andrew had a tournament record of 1-2. This was a huge step for both Andrew and the program as both he and Vinnie have raised the expectations of what is required of the other wrestlers in the off season. Unlike Andrew this was Vinnie’s second trip to the National Tournament as he participated in the Sophomore Nationals last Spring. Vinnie got his tournament started off with a win by pin. In his second match Vinnie had an illegal move put on him and was unable to continue in that match or his next one, he was forced to forfeit in an effort to rest and ice his injury in hopes that he could wrestle the next day. Vinnie was able to wrestle the next day where he recorded another win by pin but aggravated the injury and again had to forfeit out of the tournament. As returning captains both of these wrestlers have raised the bar of the program as they continue to seek out the toughest competition in an effort to improve not only themselves, but the Penncrest Wrestling Program.
